Much of the game's scenery is destructible, and occasionally, this reveals extra items or power-ups.ĭuring the course of a level, the player encounters prisoners of war (POWs), who, if freed, offer the player bonuses in the form of random items or weapons. The player does not die by coming into contact with enemies, and correspondingly, many of the enemy troops have melee attacks. The tank is known as the SV-001 ("SV" stands for Super Vehicle), which increases the player's offense and considerably adds to their defense. On the way through each level, the player can find numerous weapon upgrades and "Metal Slug" tanks. At this point, the player confronts a boss, who is usually considerably larger and tougher than regular enemies. The gameplay mechanics are the same as in previous Metal Slug games the player must shoot constantly at a continual stream of enemies in order to reach the end of each level. The game adds several features to the gameplay of the original Metal Slug and Metal Slug 2, such as weapons and vehicles, as well as introducing branching paths into the series. What's more, SNK claims the Xbox port will feature new, original missions for those who clear the game under certain conditions, but even without them it's still a top game. It should look like this.Įven better news for American Xbox owners, the game will support Xbox Live leaderboards, allowing ardent Slug fans to compete against each other for the first time and achieve moderate fame and glory (certainly more than they would displacing "FKR" from the high score table at their local arcade). D'oh! With the proposed PS2 release supposedly shelved (or at least decidedly inactive), this will mark the game's first appearance on a major home console since its arcade debut in 2000. We're a bit late with this one, I know, but nevertheless I'm thrilled to inform you all that SNK plans to ship Metal Slug 3 on Xbox in May 2004.
